What to Expect from a Garden Design Consultation in Ireland

Most landscaping projects start with a site visit. Whether you call it a consultation, a quote visit, or just having someone come and take a look, the first meeting between a homeowner and a landscaper is where a project either gets started properly or goes wrong from the beginning.

This guide explains what a good consultation should look like, what to prepare, and what to ask, so you get maximum value from the visit and a quote you can actually compare.

What a Good Site Visit Looks Like

A thorough site visit for a landscaping project in County Louth should involve:

Walking the whole garden. The landscaper needs to see the full site, not just the area you are planning to work on. Drainage from one area affects another. A retaining wall in one corner affects levels across the whole garden. Looking at the whole picture is the only way to give an accurate price.

Checking levels and drainage. This is the part many homeowners do not think to ask about but which experienced landscapers always assess. Where does water collect after rain? Is the ground sloping towards or away from the house? Is there an obvious drainage outlet at the boundary? These questions determine whether a project is straightforward or will require additional groundwork.

Assessing access. Can materials be brought in by vehicle? Is there a gate wide enough for a wheelbarrow? Does equipment need to come through the house? Access constraints affect both the price and the logistics of the job.

Understanding how the garden is used. A good landscaper will ask how you use the space, who uses it, and what you want from the finished garden. A family with young children wants different things from a garden than a couple planning primarily for entertaining or for growing vegetables.

Discussing materials. Showing samples or a portfolio of previous work helps both parties get on the same page about what the finished result will look like. Prices vary enormously between material choices, so agreeing on a material before quoting avoids the situation where you get a price and then find out the materials you actually had in mind cost significantly more.

What to Prepare Before the Visit

A little preparation before the landscaper arrives will make the consultation more productive and the quote more accurate.

Have your measurements. Knowing the approximate dimensions of your garden, or the specific area you want to work on, saves time and helps the landscaper plan more accurately.

Be clear on your priority order. Most garden projects could be expanded indefinitely. Know in advance what is essential (must do this project) and what is desirable (would like this if budget allows). Communicate that clearly so the quote reflects your actual priorities.

Collect some reference images. It does not need to be a professional design brief. A few saved images of gardens, patios, or planting styles you like gives the landscaper a clearer sense of your taste and what finish you are aiming for.

Have a rough budget in mind. You do not need to open with a figure, but having a realistic budget threshold in mind helps both parties. A good landscaper will work with your budget to propose what is achievable rather than presenting a proposal that is significantly over or under what you actually want to spend.

Know your property boundaries. If the work involves fencing or anything at a boundary, know which boundaries are yours to maintain. Check your property documentation if you are unsure.

What to Ask During the Visit

Questions worth raising during a consultation:

What is your assessment of the drainage here? This gets at whether there is groundwork needed that goes beyond what is immediately obvious.

How long have you been working on projects like this in County Louth? Local experience matters. Soil conditions, planning rules, supplier relationships, and typical weather patterns are all relevant to how a project is approached.

Will you be doing the work personally, or will you subcontract it? Some larger companies quote and then hand work to subcontractors. If continuity and personal accountability matter to you, it is worth asking.

Can I see examples of similar work you have done? Photos of actual completed projects are more informative than stock imagery.

What is your payment structure? Understand the deposit required, how stage payments work, and when the final payment is due. Never pay in full before the work is complete.

What guarantee or warranty do you offer on the work? Materials and workmanship warranties vary. For paving in particular, movement or settling within the first year is not uncommon and you want to know how that would be handled.

How Long Does a Quote Take?

For a medium-sized residential project in County Louth, a site visit typically takes 30 to 60 minutes. A written quote should follow within a few days. If a landscaper gives you a verbal price on the spot without taking measurements or making notes, treat it with caution. Accurate prices require accurate information.

Comparing Quotes

If you are getting multiple quotes, make sure they are quoting for the same scope and materials. A quote that is significantly cheaper may be excluding groundwork, using cheaper materials, or planning a less thorough approach to drainage and sub-base preparation. The cheapest quote on a garden project is rarely the best value.
