Hedge Trimming Cost in Ireland: 2025 Price Guide

Getting your hedges trimmed by a professional saves time and produces a cleaner result than most DIY attempts, particularly for tall, long, or overgrown hedges. But what does it actually cost in Ireland? This guide gives you a realistic breakdown of hedge trimming prices, what drives the cost up or down, and what you should get for your money.

Typical Hedge Trimming Costs in Ireland

Hedge trimming is almost always priced by the hour in Ireland, with some gardeners quoting per job once they have assessed the hedge on site.

Hourly rates for a single gardener with the right equipment typically run from €30 to €60 per hour. More specialist work, such as tall hedges requiring platform access, can push this higher.

Minimum call-out charges apply with most professionals. Even a small 10-minute job will generally carry a minimum fee of €60 to €100 to cover travel and setup time. It is worth bundling hedge trimming with other garden maintenance tasks to get better value.

As a rough guide for common hedge types in County Louth:

Hedge typeApproximate timeTypical cost
Small garden hedge up to 1m tall, 10m length30-60 mins€40-€80
Standard boundary hedge 1.5-2m, 20-30m length1-2 hours€60-€120
Tall hedge over 2m, 20-30m length2-4 hours€100-€200
Very large or overgrown hedge, clearance workHalf to full day€200-€400+

Clipping removal is usually included in professional quotes but confirm this before work begins.

What Affects the Price?

Height is the single biggest factor. Hedges up to around 1.5 metres can be trimmed without ladders or platforms. Anything taller takes longer, requires more care, and may need scaffolding towers or elevated platforms, which all add to the cost.

Length determines how long the job takes and therefore the labour cost.

Condition of the hedge. A hedge that is trimmed regularly twice a year takes far less time to maintain than one that has been left for two or three years. Overgrown hedges often need multiple passes and more cleanup. The first professional cut on a neglected hedge almost always costs more than subsequent maintenance visits.

Type of plant. Leylandii conifers grow fast and produce large volumes of clippings. Beech, hornbeam, and box hedges require more precision work. Native mixed hedges with briars and hawthorn are harder on blades and take longer.

Access. A hedge running along a straight open boundary is straightforward to work on. A hedge hemmed in by fencing on one side, overhanging a neighbour, or located in a tight passageway takes more time and care.

Clipping disposal. Most gardeners will take clippings away, but for large volumes this may be quoted as an extra cost. If you have a compost area or green waste bin, let the gardener know in advance.

How Often Should Hedges Be Trimmed?

In Ireland, most garden hedges need trimming once or twice a year:

  • Once a year is sufficient for slow-growing hedges like yew, box, or most native species. Autumn is usually best, after nesting season ends in August.
  • Twice a year is recommended for faster-growing hedges, particularly leylandii and beech, to keep them at a manageable size and density. Spring and late summer are the typical timing.
  • Three or more times is sometimes needed for formally shaped hedges in larger gardens or commercial properties.

Trimming regularly is the most cost-effective approach over time. A hedge that receives two modest cuts a year is cheaper to maintain annually than one that only gets cut every two years and requires heavier work each time.

Nesting Season Rules in Ireland

This is worth knowing before you book. Under the Wildlife Act, it is illegal to cut or remove hedges between 1 March and 31 August in Ireland. This protects nesting birds during the breeding season. The restriction applies to all hedgerows, not just those on farms.

There is an exemption for safety reasons or where works are essential, but routine trimming must happen outside this window. That means the main trimming windows are:

  • September to the end of February

If a contractor offers to cut your hedge in June or July for a standard trim, that should give you pause.

Hedge Trimming vs. Hedge Removal

Trimming and removal are two quite different jobs in terms of cost. Removal involves cutting the hedge back to the base or pulling out roots entirely, which requires more labour and usually a way to dispose of significantly more material.

Hedge removal typically costs from €200 upwards depending on size. Stump removal or grinding, if required, adds further cost.

Getting a Fair Quote

Before calling for quotes, it helps to know:

  • The approximate height and length of your hedge
  • When it was last cut
  • Whether you need clippings removed
  • Whether the hedge is on a boundary with a neighbour
