Lawn scarifying is one of the most effective treatments for reviving a tired, mossy, or thatch-heavy Irish lawn. It is also one of the more misunderstood services, with a wide range of prices and significant variation in what different contractors include. This guide covers what scarifying costs in Ireland, what affects the price, and how to know if you are getting good value.
What Does Scarifying Cost in Ireland?
Professional lawn scarifying in Ireland is priced in one of two ways: by the hour or as a flat rate per visit.
Hourly rates for a professional gardener carrying out scarifying typically run from €35 to €60 per hour. A standard residential lawn in County Louth takes one to two hours to scarify properly.
Flat-rate pricing per lawn is more common. As a guide:
| Lawn size | Typical cost (scarifying only) |
|---|---|
| Small (under 40m²) | €60-€100 |
| Medium (40-100m²) | €100-€180 |
| Large (100-200m²) | €180-€300 |
| Very large (200m²+) | €300+ |
These prices are for the scarifying work itself. Additional services are usually charged separately.
What Is and Is Not Included
A scarifying quote should clearly state what is included. The work typically breaks down into:
The scarifying pass itself: Running the scarifier across the lawn to cut through thatch and surface moss. Usually included in all quotes.
Raking off the extracted material: Scarifying produces large volumes of dead grass, moss, and thatch that need to be raked off and removed. This should be included but confirm it.
Disposal of material: Removal of the extracted material from site. Not always included. If you have a compost area, this can reduce cost. If the contractor needs to take it away, a disposal charge may apply.
Overseeding after scarifying: After scarifying, bare patches often benefit from overseeding to encourage new growth. This is usually charged separately, typically €15 to €30 depending on lawn size and seed used.
Fertilising after scarifying: A post-scarifying lawn feed helps recovery. Again, this is usually additional.
A full lawn renovation package combining scarifying, aeration, overseeding, and fertilising is offered by some gardeners as a single package, typically €200 to €450 for a medium-sized residential lawn. This approach gives better results than scarifying alone.
What Affects the Price?
Lawn size is the primary driver. Larger lawns take proportionally longer and produce more material to remove.
Condition of the lawn. A lawn that has not been scarified for several years, or one that is heavily matted with moss and dead material, takes significantly longer to process. Some very neglected lawns may need two passes. First-visit prices on neglected lawns are higher than ongoing maintenance prices.
Accessibility. If the scarifier needs to be carried through a narrow passage or the garden has difficult access, this adds time.
Machine type used. Petrol-powered cylinder or rotary scarifiers produce better results on overgrown lawns than electric machines. Professional equipment is heavier and more aggressive but more effective on matted lawns.
Time of year. Scarifying in spring or autumn (the two optimal windows in Ireland) is standard. Out-of-season scarifying is sometimes requested but should be treated with caution.
Is Scarifying Worth It?
For most County Louth lawns that have been in place for five or more years, yes. The combination of heavy rainfall, mild temperatures, and clay-heavy soils means Irish lawns accumulate thatch and moss relatively quickly. A well-scarified lawn that is then overseeded and fertilised typically looks significantly better within four to six weeks.
Signs that your lawn would benefit from scarifying:
- The surface feels spongy underfoot
- There is visible moss, particularly after winter
- Water sits on the surface rather than draining through
- The lawn has not been scarified in three or more years
- Bare or patchy areas that do not respond to overseeding alone
